and
Faye Young Strum Scholarship

The Dr. Williamson B. Strum and Faye Young Strum Scholarship

The Dr. Williamson B. Strum and Faye Young Strum Scholarship was established by Dr. Williamson B. Strum, MD and Faye Young Strum, MEd, in 2020 to provide two scholarships for deserving students graduating from Person High School who plan to attend a private or public university, community college, or recognized trade school.

This award is given to students who are in need of financial support and are first in their family to attend post-high school education.   The scholarship provides recipients with a $5,000 per year award to attend a public university or $2,500 per year to attend a community college or recognized trade school. Each scholarship is renewable for one additional year provided the appropriate benchmarks are reached.

About the Dr Williamson B. Strum and Faye Young Strum Scholarship
  Established 2020

This scholarship is in recognition of the Strum and Young families who have resided in Person County area for over 200 years and have long respected the power of education.

Andrew Jackson Strum was born in Granville County in 1858 and moved to Allensville in 1884; he married Theo Gentry.  Bertie Beam “Jack” Strum, the second child, was born in 1892, attended school in Woodsdale, served in World War l, and moved to Roxboro where he became co-owner of Gentry and Strum clothiers, later known as Gentry, Strum, and Foushee. He married Hazel Beasley in 1932.  Their two sons, Jackie and Williamson (Bill), graduated from Roxboro High School and Wake Forest University.  Bill obtained an MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Robert Kiles Young was born in Person County in 1883.  He married Lucy Gravitte and had 10 children. The oldest was Edward “Bob” Young who worked at Collins and Aiken and owned Young Monument Company. He married Blanche Thornton in 1936. The two children, Faye and Kyle, attended Roxboro High School and Wake Forest University.  Faye obtained an MEd from the University of North Carolina, and Kyle an MD from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
