Encouraging Educational Opportunities through Community Collaboration

For the 2025-26 scholarship award cycle ONLY, we have these unique scholarships:
 
Arc of Person County Learning Beyond High School Scholarship (number and value of awards vary, up to a total $1,500 available per year, non-renewable). This scholarship is established to further promote and encourage former Arc students to pursue post-secondary education, to learn beyond high school and to realize their goals. Applicants can be graduates of any Person County public or private high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education or a NC Free Residential High School. Further, any high school students who have actively volunteered to support the mission of Arc in assisting other students may be considered. 
 
D&L Reynolds Foundation Scholarship (5 awards, each for $2,000 non-renewable). This outstanding wide-ranging scholarship award package allows graduating high school students interested in a diverse group of career choices to apply for scholarship recognition. Students wanting to become nurses, health care providers, auto mechanics, electricians, HVAC technicians, ministers, among other professions, will want to apply. Some considerations and restrictions are included; for example, for those students interested in religious studies and ministerial training, this award only applies to those planning to attend Liberty University. In addition to high school graduates of Person High School, Roxboro Community School, or NC Free Public Residential High School, all five (5) awards allow for students who have recently, and successfully, completed the Piedmont Community College’s preparatory program for high school equivalency tests (GED) to apply. 
 
Rotary Club of Roxboro Scholarship (3 awards, up to 2 winners possible per award, for $2,000 each non-renewable). One award is open to any graduate of Person High, one award is open to any graduate of Roxboro Community School, and one award (Nichols) is open to any graduate of any Person County private or public high school, any home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Residential High School. These awards are available for graduates to attend any 4-year private or public college or university. Applicants must be Person County residents, and will be evaluated based on academic achievement, character, leadership, and extra-curricular activities.
 
The Victoria Jalissa Bradsher Daniel Memorial Scholarship (1 award, $500 non-renewable). This $500 scholarship is available to Person County Schools graduating seniors planning to attend Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina Central University, or North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University. Applicants will complete an application and interview process where good moral character, academics, financial need, community service, and leadership, are considerations.
 
Reverend L.G. and Rosa Harris Elliott Scholarship (1 award, $1,000 non-renewable). This scholarship is available to Person High School graduates planning to attend a community college, 4-year private or public college or university, and is interested in a teaching career, or other career opportunities within the field of education. Applicants will be evaluated on leadership, academic accomplishments, community service, and financial need.
 
Trent Yarborough Memorial Scholarship (1 award, $1,000, renewable up to 3 more years). This merit-based scholarship is available to any graduate of a Person County high school, or a NC Free Residential High School. Applicants will be considered independent of majors being pursued, but those headed to schools to major in engineering will be given preference, and other STEM disciplines will be highly considered.
 
Charles Anderson (Andy) Thomas Memorial Scholarship (1 award, $500 non-renewable). Funded by the Person High Rocket Booster Club, applicants must be graduates of Person High School. Extra-curricular participation in Person High and/or community athletic programs by the applicant, in addition to other eligibility factors, will be considered. 
 
Robah K. Burke, Sr. Family Scholarship (1 award, $1,000 non-renewable).  Available to graduates of Person High School only, this scholarship is available for students attending Appalachian State University, and who are planning to pursue a post-secondary degree from ASU’s College of Education. Academic excellence, financial need, and other eligibility criteria will be considered.
 
Charlie Hubbard Memorial Scholarship (1 award, $500 non-renewable). Student-athlete high school graduates from any Person County private or public high school will receive first consideration, followed by those involved in amateur sports (in addition to any in high school). Attendance at any trade school, community college, or 4-year college or university will be eligible. Considerations include academics, financial need, and other extra-curricular activities.
 
Neb King, Inc. Scholarship (1 award, $500 non-renewable). Available to graduates from Person High School, PECIL, Roxboro Community School, or a NC Free Public Residential High School for attendance at any college, university, or vocational/trade school in North Carolina. High academic achievement, school spirit, and community involvement are distinguishing characteristics desired for selection.
 
Hodge/Rogers Scholarship (1 award, $5,000 renewable for up to 3 more years).  One (1) graduate from Person High School or Roxboro Community School will receive $5,000 per year toward post-secondary education at East Carolina University, assuming renewal criteria are met each year. This student will become a member of ECU’s Access Scholarship Program, as the Hodge/Rogers Access Scholar, which is a personal development program including volunteer community service. Applicants should ideally exhibit financial need, good academics, a record of community service, and other measures of strong character. Students who are first generation college and/or come from a single parent household are encouraged to apply. 
 
David and Dr. Vickie Tribble Scholarship (1 award, $500 non-renewable). This scholarship is established to encourage a graduate of any Public County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School to pursue any course of post-secondary study in any field at a trade school, community college, private or public college or university. Financial need and academic record are important considerations.

Friends of PCGAL Nancy Wagstaff Scholarship (1 award, $1,000 renewable up to one more year). This scholarship is to encourage a former Person County foster child or adult (up to 30 years of age), who is a high school graduate from any public or private high school, GED, qualified home school authorized by NC Division of Non-Public Education or NC Free Residential high school to pursue furthering his/her post-secondary education at a trade school, community college, private college, or public university.  

Norman E. “Sonny” Cole, Sr. Family Scholarship (1 award, $1,500 non-renewable). Applicants for this scholarship can be graduates from any Person County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. Additionally, those completing the NC General Education Development (GED) tests for high school equivalency through Piedmont Community College within the last 12 months prior to the scholarship application date, are also eligible to apply. This scholarship is established to encourage a graduate to pursue any course of post-secondary study in any field at a trade school, community college, private or public college or university. Scholastic/academic record, financial need, school and/or community involvement are important considerations.
 
W.O. Humphries Family Scholarship (1 award, $1,000 non-renewable). This scholarship is available to graduates of Person High School, Roxboro Community School, or a NC Free Residential High School who are planning to attend a 4-year private or public college or university. Applicants will be evaluated on leadership, strong academic accomplishments, community service, and financial need.
 
The Kevin & Maria Wolfe Family Nursing/Health Care Careers Scholarship (1 award, $2,000 non-renewable). This scholarship is established to encourage a graduate of Person County to pursue a course of post-secondary study in nursing, or in a related health care field at a community college, private or public college or university. This student should be a graduate from any Person County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. Additionally, those completing the NC General Education Development (GED) tests for high school equivalency through Piedmont Community College within the last 12 months prior to the scholarship application date, are also eligible to apply.  
 
Dr. Thomas & Lelia C. Long Scholarship (1 award, $1,000 renewable up to 3 more years). Available to graduates from Person High School or Roxboro Community School for attendance at any community college, or private or public college or university in North Carolina. High academic achievement, strong leadership skills, school spirit, and community involvement are distinguishing characteristics desired for selection.
 
Legacy Building Company 49er Scholarship Fund (1 award, $1,000 non-renewable). Established to further promote and encourage Person County high school graduates to pursue post-secondary education at the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC). This scholarship is available to graduates of any Person County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. While students pursuing any course of study at UNCC are eligible, priority consideration will be given to those applying for construction management, construction engineering, or other fields related to a career in residential and/or commercial building.  
 
D. Hayes Clement Family Scholarship (2 awards, $1,000 each non-renewable). Established to further promote and encourage Person County high school graduates to pursue post-secondary education at a recognized trade school, community college, or a private or public college or university. This scholarship is available to graduates of any Person County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. Scholastic achievement, leadership skills, and community involvement are important considerations.  
 
Sandy Moore Scholarship (1 award, $500 non-renewable). This scholarship is available to Person High School graduates planning to attend a community college, 4-year private or public college or university. Applicants who live in a single-parent household or exhibit first generation college status are highly encouraged. Evidence of financial need, a high degree of perseverance, school or community service, and academic accomplishments will be evaluated.

Merle S. and Jean H. Solomon Scholarship (up to 4 awards, $1,500 per award, usually non-renewable). Applicants for this scholarship can be graduates from Person High School, Roxboro Community School, or a qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education. Applicants should be entering a vocational or technical program of study at a community college, a 2- or 4-year institution of higher learning, or a recognized trade school, pursuing a career where they will “get their hands dirty”. Should an insufficient number of applicants be pursuing a trade or vocational education career program (i.e., a “get your hands dirty” career), applicants pursuing a traditional 2- or 4-year engineering (or technology) degree career will be considered.

The Bradshaw Family Business Scholarship (1 award, $5,000 non-renewable). Established to further promote and encourage Person County high school students to pursue post-secondary education in majors which typically lead to a career in business at a recognized private or public college or university. Open to graduates from any Person County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. Additionally, those completing the NC General Education Development (GED) tests for high school equivalency through Piedmont Community College within the last 12 months prior to the scholarship application date, are also eligible to apply. Scholastic/academic record (minimum of top 10% of graduating class), financial need (should be considered “of need”, using Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) data like SAI or COA), school and/or community involvement, and other information as required in the standard PCEF application.
 
Rebecca Gentry Wilson “Rise Up” Scholarship (2 awards, $1,000 each non-renewable). This scholarship is available to graduates from Person High School, Roxboro Community School, Roxboro Christian Academy, a qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. While all majors are considered, applicants should be planning to attend a community college, 4-year private or public college or university, and be interested in a teaching career, or other career opportunities within, or supporting, the field of education. Applicants will be evaluated on financial need, perseverance to face and overcome life obstacles, academics, leadership and community service.
 
Sarah E. Morton “Teach in Person” Scholarship (2 awards, $1,000 each renewable up to one more year). Available to graduates from Person High School for attendance at any community college, private or public college or university pursuing a career as a teacher. Those planning to return to Person County after graduation to teach will be more highly considered. Demonstrated integrity of character, initiative, and leadership among peers, academic achievement, school spirit, and community involvement are distinguishing characteristics desired for selection.
 
Busy Beaver Auto & Boat Detail Scholarship (1 award, $500 non-renewable). This scholarship was created to recognize students who possess a desire for entrepreneurship, and evidence of the motivation necessary through personal experiences and commitment. Available to graduates of Person High School, PECIL, Roxboro Community School, or a NC Free Public Residential High School to pursue post-secondary education at a recognized trade school, community college, or a private or public college or university. Considerations include academic success, evidence of entrepreneurial experiences, financial need, among other factors.
 
PCEF Woodall Spirit Scholarship (1 award, $1,000 non-renewable). This scholarship is available to graduates of Person High School, Roxboro Community School, or a NC Free Public Residential High School planning to attend a community college, 4-year private or public college or university. Applicants should have demonstrated a high moral character and integrity, a heart for helping others, and active involvement in school, church and/or community. Academic accomplishments and a demonstrated work ethic will be considered.
 
PCEF Anonymous Donors Scholarship (award number and amount varies, non-renewable). Available to Person County graduates of any type of high school for attendance at any college, university, or vocational/trade school in North Carolina. Funded through PCEF’s Anonymous Scholarship Program for donors. Academic achievement, school spirit, and community involvement are distinguishing characteristics desired for selection. Also, specific criteria may exist.
 
PCEF Scholarship (donor special awards, number and amount varies, non-renewable). This scholarship is available to Person County graduates of any type of high school planning to attend a community college, 4-year private or public college or university, and is interested in a teaching career, or other career opportunities within the field of education. Applicants will be evaluated on leadership, academic accomplishments, community service, and financial need or other specific criteria. Further, unlike the Anonymous Donor Scholarship, donors will be known to the recipients.
 
The Marie Howard Cates Scholarship Fund (1 award, $1,000 non-renewable). This scholarship is available to graduates of any Person County private or public high school, a NC Free Public Residential High School or a qualified homeschool authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education to attend a community college, 4-year private or public college or university. Additionally, those completing the NC General Education Development (GED) tests for high school equivalency through Piedmont Community College within the last 12 months prior to the scholarship application date, are also eligible to apply. Students will be evaluated on scholastic/academic accomplishments, school and/or community service, and financial need. Priority given to those students pursuing a career in teaching.
 
Dr. Williamson B. Strum and Faye Young Strum Scholarship (1 award, $5,000 renewable up to one more year). Available to graduates from Person High School for attendance at any college, university, or recognized vocational/trade school. Student must provide evidence of financial need and exhibit first generation college student status. Other favorable considerations include living with single parent, strong academic achievement, school spirit, and community involvement. Awardee will have specific reporting requirements to donors.
 
Darwin Family Scholarship (award number and amounts vary, non-renewable). This scholarship was the inspiration of an anonymous donor who sought to support students graduating from Person High or PECIL who wish to pursue post-secondary education focused on the Arts and Cultural Studies at a community college, or a public or private college or university. These scholarship awards vary and are presented to students who demonstrate academic excellence and active involvement and participation in school, church, and/or community service. Awardees must demonstrate an understanding of the importance of artistic pursuits through a consistent past commitment to arts and culture. Financial need will be considered but will not be a key determining factor.

Why I’m Ready Scholarship (2 awards, $1,500 each non-renewable). This scholarship is available to graduates of Person High School, Roxboro Community School, a NC Free Public Residential High School or a qualified homeschool authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education to attend a community college, 4-year private or public college or university. Applicants will be evaluated on leadership, academic accomplishments, community service, and financial need. Applicant must provide a short-written essay detailing how he/she knows they are college and career ready and how that shaped their post-secondary plans. 

The Richard Vining Person Veterans Council Scholarship (1 award, $2,000 non-renewable) was established to recognize and assist college-bound children or grandchildren of military veterans. This award will be given each year to a graduate from any Person County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. Additionally, those completing the NC General Education Development (GED) tests for high school equivalency through Piedmont Community College within the last 12 months prior to the scholarship application date, are also eligible to apply. Applicants for this award must be the child or grandchild (includes stepchildren and step grandchildren) of a veteran who has honorably served (retired or active) in the recognized armed forces of the United States--these include the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, as well as reserve components Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.  
 
The Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce Volunteerism Scholarship (2 awards, $2,000 each non-renewable) was established to further promote and encourage Person County high school students, to instill and pursue a sense of volunteerism while attending high school and, upon graduation, to pursue post-secondary education at a recognized trade school, community college, or a private or public college or university. Graduation from any Person County private or public high school, qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education, or a NC Free Public Residential High School. Additionally, those completing the NC General Education Development (GED) tests for high school equivalency through Piedmont Community College within the last 12 months prior to the scholarship application date, are also eligible to apply. 
 
Zeke & Pam Smith Wolves & Pirates Forever Scholarship (2 awards, $1,000 each non-renewable). This scholarship fund consists of 2 awards, and both are available to graduates of Person County Schools, Roxboro Community School, Roxboro Christian Academy, a NC Free Public Residential High School, or a qualified home school authorized by the NC Division of Non-Public Education. Applicants planning to attend NC State University may earn the Wolf Award, with preference given to those enrolling in NC State’s College of Engineering; applicants planning to attend East Carolina University may earn the Pirate Award, with preference given to those enrolling in the ECU’s College of Education. Other majors will be considered for either award. Awards are given in alternating years; Wolf Award in odd numbered years and Pirate Award in even numbered years, and students will be evaluated on leadership, academic accomplishments, community service, and financial need.
