2018 Sarah Elizabeth Morton "Teach In Person" Beginning Teacher Award Recipients

The Person County Education Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s winners of the newly established Sarah Elizabeth Morton “Teach In Person” (TIP) Award for college graduates returning to Person County Schools to teach.  The following recipients each received $300 and were honored at the Person County Education Foundation’s Board Meeting at Roxboro Baptist Church on Thursday, August 9, 2018.

In addition to being a graduate of Person High School or Person Early College for Innovation & Leadership, each applicant must have been hired to teach in Person County Schools for 2017 - 2018 as a beginning teacher.  All TIP Award applicants submitted an online application, resume, and essay.  The PCEF Scholarship Committee evaluated each applicant based on college involvement, character, leadership among peers, service in the community, and additional volunteerism within the Person County Schools.
Congratulations to the following three Person County school teachers on receiving the 2018 Sarah Elizabeth Morton “Teach In Person” Award.   Award money is intended to provide funding to help the recipient purchase materials for his or her classroom for his or her first years of teaching.

The Sarah Elizabeth Morton “Teach In Person” Award was established in 2018 for college graduates returning to PCS to teach.  In 2012, Rena Morton established the Sarah Elizabeth Morton “Teach In Person” Scholarship in memory of her daughter. A 1999 graduate of PHS, Sarah received her bachelor’s degree from UNC Wilmington in 2003 and six years later received her National Board Certification as well as her master’s degree from East Carolina University. She taught eighth grade social studies at Southern Middle School for six years and advised the student council and yearbook staffs. In May 2010, Sarah lost her battle to ovarian cancer. The endowment, along with monies donated by Person County Schools’ employees, offers awards to PHS graduates who are beginning teachers hired to teach in the Person County School System. Rena’s wish is to find great teachers, like Sarah, who are passionate about serving others and their community.

This year, Person County School employees raised over $4,000.00 during the annual TIPS campaign.  North End Elementary students raised over $1,700.00.  Monies collected from the annual Person County Schools TIP fundraiser allowed PCEF to award three recipients to help support these beginning teachers as they return home to begin their careers in Person County.  The Person County Education Foundation appreciates the community involvement that made this year’s TIPS Campaign such a success and PCEF is excited to have so many educators joining us on our mission!  The Person County Education Foundation sincerely thanks you for your support.
