Reverend Elliott overcame many struggles and obstacles to obtain his divinity degree from Furman University in South Carolina. After obtaining a Master of Theology Degree from Southern Seminary, he pastored churches throughout South Carolina, North Carolina, and Indiana. Before coming to Roxboro, he was Pastor of First Baptist Church in Waynesville, North Carolina. Reverend Elliott was a Pastor of Roxboro Baptist Church from 1950-1968 where he was affectionately called “Pappy”. In 1984 he was named Pastor Emeritus of Roxboro Baptist Church, where the fellowship hall has been named in his honor. Reverend Elliott believed that hard work and determination was important at every stage of life. He believed in lifelong learning and was constantly looking for ways to improve.
Rosa Harris Elliott’s love of children and belief in the importance of early education led to her leadership of a kindergarten program at Roxboro Baptist Church. Established in 1948, the program pre-dated North Carolina’s public school kindergartens. Her son, Bobby Harris, was a student in her first class. Rosa continued her love for teaching kindergarten until her retirement in 1968. In 1971, Rosa’s program was directed by the Roxboro Baptist Church as an official Preschool Kindergarten and continues today as a preschool for three and four-year-old children. Her dedication to education has left a lasting impact in education and throughout history.
